Tai Chi Chuan

"Legs like mountains...hands like clouds...movement like water"

The (Way of) the Supreme Ultimate Fist.
The Grand Supreme.
Yin Yang Boxing.

Most commonly known in the West as the soft gentle slow moving exercise regime that old ladies do in the park...

Well sometimes it is!! And as excellent as it is as a therapeutic and callisthenic exercise for the elderly, there is so much more to this beautiful and rewarding Artform. Many of these elderly practitioners would have been practising for many years and that is exactly why they possess levels of flexibility, strength, agility, and concentration that belie their years. An ideal exercise regime for all ages it encompasses a wide range of practices from the 'Yin' - soft, meditational/healing - to the 'Yang' - vigorous/self-defence - (an obvious over simplification!), and everything in-between. Notice that the Tai Chi symbol is a circle.

Tai Chi Chuan is a Chinese Internal Martial Art.

Within the 'Forms' and 'Pairwork' exercises of T`ai Chi Chuan is a Wholistic system of practice that is at the same time physical exercise and maintenance (works all of the joints, tendons, connective tissues, body systems etc etc), meditation (de-stresses and relaxes the body, then the mind, and calms the spirit to ever deeper levels), and at more experienced levels a system of self-protection through deeper understanding of one's posture, balance, movement, and energies on an unconscious and sensory level, before more recognisable 'Martial' techniques are learnt. Although not all students will wish to pursue the martial aspects to proficiency, a basic understanding of the Arts' original intentions is necessary to invigorate practice.

This beautiful Art is deceptive:

It is (at a relative level of proficiency!) very calming and relaxing to practice, but tends to raise and invigorate energy levels. Imagine that...bags of energy, but with a relaxed supple body, and quiet focussed mind!

Also, because of the apparent gentleness and slowness of practice, it can appear easy...it is not!!

However, the rewards of regular (daily!!) practice are immense, and can go far beyond the mere physical 'feel-good' factor of regular exercise.
